Listening With the Heart and the Spirit

Wherefore, my beloved brethren,
let every man be swift to hear,
slow to speak,
slow to wrath
James 1:19 (KJV)

It’s been said that God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason: to listen more and speak less. These are wise words for anyone, but especially for us as Christian counselors who have a calling to listen, not only with our ears but with our hearts. We must also be intentional in listening to the Holy Spirit, who gives us counsel. Only then should we be willing to speak.

It is encouraging that God’s Word will always provide us with a plan that leads to success and avoids hostility.

Reflection

In today’s fast-paced world, people are often quick to respond and react, but slow to truly listen. James 1:19 reminds us that godly wisdom begins with humility and patience. As Christian counselors, listening is more than a professional skill—it is a ministry of compassion and discernment.

When we take the time to listen carefully to others and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit before speaking, we create space for healing, understanding, and peace. God’s Word continues to provide timeless wisdom that not only strengthens our counseling but also deepens our walk with Christ.

May we continually grow in our ability to listen well, speak wisely, and reflect the love and grace of our Savior in every conversation.
